Arizona's Development

Approach

Arizona's Definition of English

Learner(EL):

Arizona has many ways/terminology they call English Learner students. According to azauditor (2023) EL students are students who's language is not English and who have difficulties comprehending or writing English. English learners may take a little more patience and guidance because they are learning a new language after all.

Distinctions Between Instructional

Program Models:

ESL in English as a second language and the instruction is usually in English with some native language (U.S. Department of Education, 2023). Bilingual is where a student can learn in English and native language. According to the Department of Education (2023), in sheltered classrooms, students do physical activity and use a lot of visual aids. Structured English Immersion has many goals for students such as helping them so they are able to do English-only classes.

Arizona's Language Development

Approach and Synthesis

According to the Arizona Department of Education (2019), English Learners (ELs) are valuable to the education community. Arizona's Language Development Approach helps students and educators learn/teach behaviors, expectations, instruction in disciplinary language, explicit and targeted instruction, assessment, and feedback. Students learn a lot from this approach and many educators learn from this approach, even if it is new ways to teach certain things.

Student Agency Explanation

and Importance:

Student agency is learning through activities that are driven by student's interests (Renaissance, 2023). This is important in the instruction of ELLs because it allows students to use their voice to voice opinions, learn through things they like, and figure out what helps them more or what makes things worse. Student agency essentially helps the students and educators in the long run.

Four Principals of Arizona's

Language Development Approach

-Asset-based behaviors and expectations provides supports and opportunities to ensure linguistically and culturally practices are happening for EL students (Arizona Department of Education, 2019).

-Integrated instruction in disciplinary language and content helps ensure teachers are making good plans and creating good supports to help students meet the proper language development levels.

-Arizona Department of Education (2019) states that targeted and explicit language instruction helps students engage in grade-level disciplinary content so they are able to learn the best they can in literacy and language.

-Assessment, monitoring, and feedback helps ensure students are taking the proper tests, doing the correct language-level, and getting feedback to help them succeed.

SEI Models Research-Based:

-Pull-out SEI: ELA is done every day because that is what helps students with language development. ELA classes are usually and hour each.

-Two-Hour SEI: Most days of the week EL students do two hours ELD instruction. Students have one early day a week as well and ELs get thirty minutes of ELD one day a week.

-Newcomer: With newcomer SEI models, students do 120 minutes of ELD time and 120 minutes of language instruction (Arizona Department of Education, 2020).

-50-50 dual language immersions is where students do fifty percent native language instruction and fifty percent English instruction. This is more set on getting students to English-only classes.
